What do you say about taking advantage of the last of our sunnier days and head out for a picnic?

Bring a cosy blanket and a basket filled with delicious treats for a meal in the wild – all while knowing you’re doing your part to protect the planet. Sustainable picnics are a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors while minimising your environmental impact.

Sustainable picnics

Start with the essentials: reusable picnic gear. Swap out disposable plates, cups, and cutlery for durable, reusable options made from bamboo, stainless steel, or other eco-friendly materials.

This includes:

Reusable bamboo picnic cutlery

Reusable bamboo drinking straws

Organic cotton napkins

These items are not only better for the environment but also sturdier, making your picnic experience hassle-free.

Picnic food

When planning your picnic menu, think local and seasonal. Visit your local farmer’s market for fresh produce and homemade goodies. Not only does this support local farmers, but it also cuts down on the carbon footprint associated with transporting food long distances. Go for organic and sustainably sourced items whenever possible to ensure your meal is kind to both your body and the Earth.

Why don’t you try:

Sandwiches with your favourite toppings - the variation is endless

Pasta salad - can be served cold and attracts both children and adults

Wraps - everyone can assemble their own and is easy to eat on the go

Hydration is key, so bring along a reusable water bottle or a thermos filled with your favourite drink. Skip the single-use plastic bottles and try sustainable alternatives.

Cleanup is a breeze when you’re prepared. Bring a compostable bag for any food scraps and areusable bag for any recyclables. Also make sure to pack your bag inreusable food wraps.

Go out and enjoy the sun

Sustainable picnics are not just about reducing waste; they’re about enhancing your outdoor experience. By choosing eco-friendly options, you’re creating a beautiful, green moment that respects and celebrates the natural world. So gather your friends, pack your sustainable picnic basket, and enjoy a guilt-free, delightful day in nature!

And don’t forget the sunscreen!
